Mount Mansfield is the tallest mountain in Vermont. Its summit is enjoyed by thousands of hikers every year. But did you know that it was purchased by the the University of Vermont in 1859? This talk will explain the circumstances and reasons for UVM’s extraordinary decision to purchase Vermont’s tallest mountain.

Join our Free Monthly Lecture, “The University of Vermont’s Unprecedented 1859 Purchase of the Summit of Mount Mansfield” by Robert A. Mello, this Sunday March 16, 2025 2-3pm at the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum. This event is free to all to attend. Registration is not required. Refreshments will be provided. Robert A. Mello is a former Trustee of the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum and the Vermont Historical Society and a retired Superior Judge. He has had a life-long fascination with American history and the law, especially the early history of Vermont. He is also an avid hiker. Mello is the author of two books, gLast Stand of the Red Spruce (Island Press, 1984) and Moses Robinson and the Founding of Vermont (Vermont Historical Society, 2014), and he is presently writing a history of the forestry movement in Vermont.
